Rod Hole Repairs
Not doing rod hole repairs in concrete poured walls probably leaks the most. The Average Job We Go on, if owner has not been keeping up on their rod hole repairs. Needs about 25 rod hole repairs and maybe two cracks. In total you would think the cracks because there eight feet tall usually would leak the most water but not really, the rod hole repairs is the one that actually fixes the most items. And in that way actually stops the most water.
How do these rod hole repairs differ in different rod holes.
These original rod hole repairs are prepared with hydraulic cement which over time has dried and shrunk to where it is not covering the entire hole. If you notice that the repairs from the hydraulic cement looks more like a partial moon with a big curved opening on it some side or other. As this hydraulic cement shrinks the little partial moon shaped opening gets bigger and bigger. Then there is the white stuff on the inside of the basement which is actually ground up limestone. Limestone is not all, waterproof once it is ground up for spraying. Not there for the rod hole repairs, that is only put there to hide minor defects in the poured concrete surface. So actually with all this going on the surface they have leaks from these 25 Rod holes that are of various types and amounts of water in the rod hole repairs.
What do the different types of leaks look like before we do the rod hole repairs?
I think we could qualify those into about four different types. The first type would be a rod hole that is only indented into the basement wall a little bit. What has happened there is water is just now starting to come out and the hydraulic cement is shrinking enough to make an indentation but maybe not have a hole in it yet. The next way to spot these would be with the small indentation but the indentation is stained a little darker. The dark stain comes from dirt being brought in with the water from the outside of the house. The next one would be a little worse and that the stain set of being small or very light would be a lot larger something like a baseball size. Sometimes drooping down a little bit. Then there is a type that is dark but much larger dark. This rod hole repairs could be as big around as a volleyball and there is a streak running down from this of brown dirt colored water that runs all way to the floor. We do the rod hole repairs all the same for each type of stain on the wall. All of these leaks are causing moisture to build up in the basement due to the fact that water is running out of all of them and evaporating. Some of them do hit the floor however and start running along the floor. To us they all look the same.
What about this water, what is it doing?
There could be enough water entering a basement and evaporating into the air to fill a plastic bucket during one rainstorm. That’s a lot of humidity. Remember humidity is what causes mold. Say anything above 32% mold will grow anything above 52% humidity, mold will flourish. As only one it gets solid water that doesn’t evaporate does leave and do something like a black stain because it’s growing so much. You must do your rod hole repairs cause every time you breathe in a musty smelling basement, you are probably breathing in 100,000 spores in each breath. That’s because the atomic sized spores are only a little bit bigger than an atom. So the water is really leaking from all these Rod holes into the basement. If water does not collect on the floor before the rod hole repairs and run into a drain or something it is at least building up the humidity above 52%. The reason I say 100,000 spores before you can smell mold is that it takes 100,000 spores on a test strip before it will work.
